The
Cowhorse
Performance Sale was
held July 14, 2007, at Headwaters Livestock in Three Forks,
Montana
. Despite the 100+ degree weather, a good crowd turned out for the sale.
A preview was held before the sale in the outdoor arena, and featured
rope horses, cutting horses, reined cow horses, and good ranch horses.
The
high-selling horse was Autumns Cherokee Kid, a 1997 AQHA bay gelding
sired by Skipper Luck by Skip’s Cherokee, and out of a Paging Mr.
Gunsmoke granddaughter. Consigned by Turner Performance Horses of
Victor, MT, this gelding would work both ends of a steer and was shown
in the preview roping steers, and sold to Larry Waid of Helena, MT, for
$5,500.
The
top five geldings averaged $4,260; and the fifty geldings averaged
$1,868; broke mares averaged $1,160.

The
Seventh Annual Rocky Mountain
Breeders Association (RMBA) Production Sale
was held August 25, 2007, at the fairgrounds in Deer Lodge, Montana.
Buyers from as far away as North Carolina participated in the sale. New
this year, the sale also offered on-line bidding through
www.horseauctions.com.
The sale was preceded by a two-day horse show which
included a ranch horse competition and jackpot herd roping, as well as
the "Round Pen Shoot Out" which featured three trainers
starting young horses in just two days. The Round
Pen Shoot-out winner 2007 was Matt Brooks of
Deer Lodge.
Two horses tied for high-selling honors. A 2005 AQHA
palomino mare, Cowboy Lace, was consigned by David and Susan Ostler. The
mare had been used under saddle to move cows and to rope light calves.
Sired by Leos Golden Buckshot, and out of a Cactus Twist granddaughter,
she sold to Michele Sare of Hall, MT, for $3,500.
The co-high-selling horse was Highbrow Ladd Junior, a
2004 AQHA red roan gelding consigned by Phil and Autumn Murphy of A+
Quarter Horses. This horse had been used extensively on the ranch
working cattle and negotiating any terrain. Sired by High Brow Ladd by
High Brow Hickory and out of a Doc’s Zimfandel granddaughter, he was
purchased by Thomas Hatch of Helmville, MT, for $3,500.

8th
Annual Cow Country Quarter Horse Association
Sale
was held August 31, 2007, in Miles City, MT. In the course of eight
years, this event has grown into a two-day event with a Youth show, 4D
Barrel Race, Team Roping, Futurity Competition, and
Sale
.
The
CCQHA Futurity Competitions offered the record number of entries cash
prizes totaling $14,710.
The
high-selling horse was Freckles O Dynamite, an AQHA 2002 chestnut
gelding, consigned by Don and Sheila Nelson of
Glasgow
,
MT.
Sired
by Snip Of Colonel and out of Dun O’Dynamite, he sold to Boyd Bishop
of
Gillette
,
WY
, for $6,400.
The
high-selling weanling was an AQHA chestnut filly consigned by JT and
Julie Korkow, Bar JT Quarter Horses, of Broadus, MT. Sired by Surefine
Whiskey by Paddys Irish Whiskey, and out of Lady Patsy Bueno, she was
purchased by Cynthia Thornton of Miles City, MT, for $2,100.
The
high-selling mare was MAP Tontos Lady, a 2002 AQHA gray mare sired by
Jack Tonto and out of MAP Tallywood Lady. Consigned by Rebecca Compher
of
Colorado
, who had purchased her at a previous CCQHA sale, she went home with
Bruce Locke of Miles City, MT, for $1,450.
The
top eight weanlings averaged $1,313; with the top fillies at $1,513
ahead of colts; yearlings averaged $1,070; and nine geldings averaged
$2,583.
