White Cap Bridge Closed In Wilderness

Hamilton, MT. – The West Fork Ranger District on the Bitterroot National Forest has announced that it is closing the remote White Cap Bridge located in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness because the main bridge span has failed.  Forest Service personnel discovered the failure last week.

One of the three stringers (log supports) underneath the bridge apparently rotted out and collapsed sometime this winter.  See attached photo of bridge failure.

The White Cap Bridge is located approximately 8 miles from the White Cap Trailhead near the popular Paradise boat launch on the Selway River .  The bridge spans White Cap Creek and can be accessed from the White Cap and Canyon Creek Trails.  It is used primarily by pack stock and hikers and backpackers in the summer.  These is also an outfitter camp in the area used during the spring and fall for hunting trips.

The bridge will remain closed until repairs can be made to replace the main support.  For more information contact the West Fork Ranger District at (406) 821-3269.
