MDOL Encourages Brand Holders to
Rerecord Online 10 minutes for 10 years: New service offers convenience,
speed.
Owners of
Montana
brands can begin rerecording their brands online the first week of
January, according to the Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL).
A new twist to a process that
was first begun in 1921, online rerecord offers convenience for brand
holders, said John Grainger, MDOL Brands Division administrator.
“Online rerecord is a way to
make things easier for brand owners,” Grainger said. “There’s
nothing to wait for or mail back – spend 10 minutes online and you’re
good for the next 10 years.”
Holders of
Montana
brands will receive a postcard the first week of January with all of the
information – name, address and brand certificate number – needed to
rerecord brands online. The postcard will provide brand holders who
don’t wish to rerecord online with directions for mail-in renewals.
Grainger said the department is
encouraging people to rerecord online.
“Online rerecord will save
brand holders time, and to be honest, will save us some time and work on
this end as well,” Grainger said. “Anything we can do to improve
efficiency saves our per capita fees.”
Also new to the rerecord process
this year, Grainger said, are changes to the grace period for late
rerecords.
“In the past people have
always had a little extra time, but it will be different this year,”
Grainger said.
Brands that are not reregistered
by December 31, 2011, will be held for a 90-day period in which only the
holder may reapply for the brand. Brands that are not renewed will be
vacated and made available to the public.
“If someone doesn’t get
their brand rerecorded by December 31 of 2011, they will get a chance to
reapply for the brand,” Grainger said. “But best way to avoid that
type of situation is to get your brand rerecorded on time.”
Every 10 years, MDOL rerecords
the state’s 55,000 active brands, which are used to help prevent loss
and theft of livestock, assist with the movement of livestock through
markets channels and identify/trace livestock in the case of animal health
emergencies.
