Huge Horse Rescue Ongoing in Montana

Dear Friends -
There is a huge horse rescue going on here in Montana . Another animal sanctuary which is called Montana Large Animal Sanctuary (no relation to us!) had 1,200 animals and has basically gone under. Of those animals, more than 80 are horses and 31 are donkeys and mini-donkeys. There are also hundreds of llamas, about 25 cattle, as well as pot belly pigs and camels.

Our Sanctuary which is Montana Horse Sanctuary was asked to help coordinate the rescue and placement of all the equines. Montana Animal Care Association and Western Montana Equine Rescue have been working closely with us as have many dedicated volunteers, farriers and veterinarians.  The entire rescue is being led by Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries and Habitat for Horses. We have most of the long-ears placed and are now in the second phase which is rescuing and placing the horses and a few ponies.

I was in Hot Springs last week and I have to say this is the most horrible situation I've ever witnessed. While many of the horses are in good flesh, there are many who are very malnourished, have exceedingly long feet (like 12 inches), some who are lousy and I doubt if any of them have had regular vet care in years! Additionally, many of the horses have had little, if any of the most basic training. This is such an incredibly sad situation.

As of today, January 11, the horses are being hauled to a wonderful foster care facility near Corvallis , Montana . Tomorrow we will have veterinarians start examining and treating them as well as highly experienced, professional farriers trimming their feet. We have nutritious hay on site for them and will be further assessing and meeting their nutritional needs.

All of these horses will need qualified, loving, forever homes. By the end of this week we will have updated information and will begin posting photos and information about each horse on our website
www.montanahorsesanctuary.org. Please visit our website to learn more. If you are interested in adopting, please download an adoption application and fill it out. That will be on our website later this week also.

If you want to donate to help this effort, please send a check to Montana Horse Sanctuary, P.O. Box 10 , Simms , MT 59477 and on the memo line write "MLAS horse rescue" so that the money is directed specifically to this effort. You may also donate on the donation page of our website on PayPal. Some folks are having trouble making that donate button work and we are trying to remedy that. If the donate button takes you to a donation page, you are good to go. Otherwise you will get an error message before you enter any of your information.

Thank you all for your help with this rescue!
Sincerely,
Jane Heath
