Adoptable Horses through Horse Haven Montana

Dear Friends of Horse Haven Montana ,

Here is an updated, “New Year” list of horses in need of adoptive homes. If you are interested, please email us and we will send you photos of the horse or horses you are interested in and an adoption application which is required. This is a brief questionnaire to help us learn more about you, your experience level and what you are looking for in a horse and helps us determine the best possible adoptive horse should you decide to proceed with the process.

All of the horses described below have wonderful and unique attributes and characteristics. Each is different in its own way.

Each horse described below requires a different kind of adopter or rider but I am always amazed at the magnificent horses in need of forever homes –it is all about the right horse for the right home and the right person for the right horse.

Please read about each one carefully and think about who might be a good fit for you or perhaps for a friend.

We have multiple photos of each horse so please feel free to email me if you are interested in a particular horse and I will be happy to send additional photos and information by email. I will try to respond as quickly as possible.

Please understand, we are looking for a very good if not the best possible home for each horse.

If you want a child’s horse, a youth horse, a pasture mate, a trail buddy, a therapeutic riding horse, even a show horse, I am amazed at the diversity, inherent skill and value and beauty of each of these horses.

Thank you,
Janet Rose - Founder/Director

Freckles: Leopard Appaloosa Older Gelding:
Trail Horse/Youth/Child/Beginner Horse & Has Been in Parades - Needs a new home ASAP but has lots of riding experience and is a very mellow, calm older gelding. What a cutie! Description: Freckles is 20-23 years and slightly sway-backed. He lifts his feet really well. He needs a trim. His back right hoof has a crack all the way up to his hair line but the owners have kept a shoe on it all the time --- and the vet says it should not cause him significant problems, when he was last seen. He needs worming, shots and teeth/float check. He's missing 1 tooth and it has been at least 10 years since he had his teeth looked at. His right eye is sore and needs an antibiotic. His manure looks good - no runny stuff anywhere. We watched him eat and it seems ok - no food was dropping out of his mouth while he chewed. It was easy to catch him. He seems to be a nice old soul. He wouldn't hurt a fly. He is alone in his pasture - Lateral bending was good on the right - not so good but do-able on the left. There is no lameness. He eats alfalfa grass mix, cracked corn and equine feed by Merit. He's a real nice boy - His owners are in their 70's and it's all they can do to just feed him . They are not in good health. Freckles hair grew in real well - no signs of Cushings.  Overall, we feel that Freckles needs some dedicated senior care and TLC but should clean up very nicely and be a wonderful child's or beginner's horse. He must have at least a companion but what a cutie - he is very average horse size but probably on the smaller end of average. Adoption donation is $200.

Kizzy: Kizzy is a registered 22 year old Arab Mare (Kismet – well known Egyptian line of Arabians). She is a flea-bitten gray as they call it but also with an undertone of freckles. She is about 14.3-15H.  This is a lovely mare who had the same wonderful owner for 20 years who passed away recently. She loves attention, loving, grooming and will stand very quietly for whatever you want to do with her. She was always ridden on the trails and is still sound for riding; never wore shoes, great feet. She does have a large belly and always has (looks like a grass belly) but this is just how she is built.  Due to her color and age, she has some small melanomas under her tail but this is quite common in a gray/white older horse and does not currently pose any known problems for her. She is up to date on trimming, worming and vaccinations and eats well (grass hay and a bit of equine senior). Would make a nice trail horse. Adoption Donation: $200

Blackie: 18 year old QH/Arab mare – healthy, sound, no health or lameness issues. Blackie is a beautiful (surprise – black) horse with a little white, big mare about 15.1 or 15.2 excellent for an intermediate rider. She is a trail horse but hasn’t been ridden very much in the past couple of years though she knows what to do and how to do. She has been in the mountains, across trails, water, bridges, but because of the lack of recent riding, might be a little spooky about some things she encounters. But I’ve come to see – almost every horse is a little spooky now and then or in the right situation so it’s almost like saying a horse has four legs. She is privately owned but growing financial and health issues lead the owners to want to place her.Blackie is quite simply a good riding horse and if you like the Quorab mix, you’ll love this very pretty mare. Requested Adoption Donation: $250

Dunny: Dunny is a registered AQHA, 20 year old youth horse; although out to pasture in the past couple of years, he would make an excellent beginner child's horse as he does have a mild form of rinbone in his front feet and walks with a slight limp. But he is otherwise healthy, sweet, and very well trained. Requested Adoption Donation: $150

Indy: Indy is a 12 year old, 15.1 or 15.2H sorrel QH/Foxtrotter Gelding who is not gaited. Some Forest Service friends took him in when his owner passed away of breast cancer and they contacted us about him to find him a permanent home. He is youth friendly and suitable for light riding at the walk or trot. Your size is not a major issue although he would do best with a youth (teen), not a big heavy man or woman. He has no health issues but is sound only for light riding. Trot around the pasture, go for a walk in the woods, teach a young person to ride, have a rideable pasture pal. He is a very nice, very handsome looking horse. He is being fostered in Florence , MT , and his foster Mom is happy to show him anytime. Adoption Donation: $200

Taz: Taz is a tall (17H), super well bred, 16 or 17 year old registered Thoroughbred Gelding. He’s in the books, official name is Raz Ma Taz. Taz was being used as a novice level eventer when he had a minor injury (flexor tendon I believe) and while technically healed, is now sound only for light, occasional easy riding – walk, trot. He can no longer do any kind of collection, dressage, etc. but if you love beautiful, big TBs, with excellent ground manners, who loves to be loved, cared for, tended to, human affection and interest, you will adore Taz. Taz was being seen by Western Montana Equine and Dr. Brown will tell you that he and his assistants LOVE Taz; they love to work with him, around him and find him gentle and kind and everyone says he really soaks up affection. He is currently in Florence , MT , at a boarding stable but a permanent home is the goal. Again, light occasional riding for Taz would be fine. He is a mellow fellow but is also a TB and would be best with someone who understands both his size and the general temperament of a TB. Taz comes from super quality breeding. Adoption Donation: $400
