The
saddle has been awarded at the 2010 Zollinger Ranch Extreme Cowboy Race Series
to a Kimberly,
Idaho
cowgirl. Rondi Johnson was the
high point
series winner on her APHA 9 year old mare "
Quincy
". The handmade championship roping saddle was presented to the winner
at the 21st Annual Zollinger Quarterhorse Ranch Production Sale held Sept 11,
2010. The series is based on the Craig Cameron Extreme Cowboy Races and is held
monthly throughout the spring and summer at the Zollinger Quarterhorse Ranch in
Oakley
,
Idaho
. Starting in March 2010and continuing through Sept., contestants were
tested on their trail skills on a course set up at the ranch through some rough
terrain. Extreme Cowboy Racing is a multi-faceted sport that requires
contestants to demonstrate both speed and horsemanship skills. The idea is to
test the communication and teamwork between horse and rider. Each course
consists of a variety of challenging obstacles. The length of the course and
terrain will vary, providing a different challenge each time. The obstacles and
challenges depict the skills used by a cowboy on a day to day basis. Creek
crossings, log jumps, roping, shooting, bridges, trailer loading, gates,
drags/carry/ride overs, tunnels, mazes, moguls, ditches, and the occasional
"wild animals". One course had a mounted bear on wheels that crossed
the trail in front of your horse! Horse and rider are judged on their ability to
work as a team and maneuver through the course with physical skill, speed,
expression and a willing attitude by the horse to perform and trust the
rider. Anyone who enjoys being outdoors and the adventure of traversing a trail
course is going to enjoy this. There is something for everyone and it is truly a
one-of a kind competition. This is one of the fastest growing sports and is
becoming widely popular.
