Cover Artist

Ralph Oberg

October 2013 issue

Portrait by Scott Burdick

This month’s cover artist is Ralph Oberg, who paints in his studio overlooking the San Juan Mountains in Southwest Colorado — where he has hiked and ridden horseback throughout his life. Their rugged beauty and wildness has always greatly inspired and influenced his work.

After attending Colorado State University in the 1960s, where Oberg considered the painting program too experimental and abstract, and a short stint at commercial illustration, he supported himself by painting highly-detailed and realistic wildlife art.

In the 1980s Oberg was influenced and taught by more impressionistic landscape and wildlife artists who painted color, light and mood. He spent the next 15 years painting plein air (painting landscapes outside in natural light). Now Oberg has come full circle back to his primary love of painting big game animals. While he uses photographs when in his studio, it is the plein air field sketches that he feels keep his work real.

Oberg’s paintings have won many awards and are included in the permanent collection of the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the International Center for Wildlife Art in England . A large landscape was purchased for the Colorado State Capital Building . Find more of Ralph Oberg’s art at www.ralphoberg.com.
