Convicted Montana Horse Abusing

Couple Back in Jail

September 2013 issue

Jack Martin and his wife Theresa Martin were charged with 26 felony and one misdemeanor counts of animal abuse in February 2011, after 70 starving and seven dead horses were found on their ranch near Bridger , Montana .

The judge gave them until September 10, 2012, to dispose of their horses, and ordered them to pay restitution of more than $7,000 for care of the horses. Jack Martin was given a two-year suspended sentence and Theresa Martin received a four-year deferred sentence.

The Martins were back in jail July 2013, for violating the terms of their probation, which stated that they could not own any livestock during probation, according to the Billings Gazette.

Eleven horses and two mini horses were found on their ranch. They were also accused of taking eleven horses that had been previously owned by them without consent from their new owner. They are also facing possible charges for a felon in possession of a firearm after one was found on their property.

Jack Martin had already served a five-year probation in Texas on two felony charges. The Martins had been accused of starving horses in Washington before moving to Montana in 2009. Complaints had also been filed against them in Bridger in 2009.

Carbon County District Court Judge Blair Jones scheduled a hearing for September 6.
