1930 "Boss of the Plains" Hat

Henry Conway Tucker purchased this original John B. Stetson Boss of the Plains hat in 1930 while he lived in California, and wore it — and cared for it very well — throughout his life. This hat has an open crown and is built from beaver blend fur felt. The sweatband reads “No. 1 Quality” followed by the symbol of three stars. The owner added his personal touch of a custom, beaded hat band.

Tucker moved west from the Dust Bowl on the Plains in the 1920s and remained there. According to his grandson, Tucker Burnham, his grandfather was a “jack of all trades,” and a master of gardening.

Tucker donated the hat to Jaxonbilt Hat Company in Salmon, Idaho , for the store’s historical hat collection called “My Heroes have always been Cowboys.” Visit the store to see the collection.

Bernice Coombs, of Jaxonbilt Hat Company, says that the hat is in very good condition except where a couple of moths have stopped by for a snack. She says the “Boss of the Plains” style has changed very little through the years and remains popular. She believes that the hat might be valued at up to $1,000 by a collector.
