Last year I wanted to give my students the opportunity to stay up with the current market trends and advancements in technology in the animal industry and the auto industry. I created an assignment that is due every month called a Periodical Paper. Each student uses a magazine on that subject, reads it, and writes a two-page summary of the article. This is a great way for me to teach about a subject that the students can see how it is applied in the real world.

I called and emailed many nationally-known magazines that would not help supply magazines, but two regional magazines were generous and donated subscriptions to the school: Rocky Mountain Rider and Working Ranch. Also, Doug and Kim, at Norman ’s Sport and Western Wear have also generously given us unsold older issues of horse magazines.

Rocky Mountain Rider is a regional periodical with great articles that are up to date and accurate. The one major factor that I love about this publication is the topics covered are issues in this part of the country. In fact, some of the articles have been about people my students have known. I really enjoy reading and I am hoping that this passion for reading and learning is passed on to my students, even in a small way, by writing these papers.

Thank you so much for helping our students stay current on horse issues and for helping me teach our students to comprehend what they read.

Note: RMR will continue to send magazines to the Cut Bank Animal Science Students in 2013.
