      Twenty-year-old Leon Wieder, of Arlee , Montana , has been riding across Montana raising money and awareness of cancer, in honor of his mother’s sister Lynette Moran, who died July 4, 2010, after an 8-year battle with the disease.

      Moran had both insurance and a family to support her, but saw other cancer patients who were not able to buy drugs needed, and families that could not afford to be there with them.

      “I was driving across Montana to Glendive last year and thought about how it might be to ride the same route. From that thought came the idea to ride for my aunt and all other cancer patients,” explains Leon . “I’d also read the article about the Lady Long Rider from Montana last year in the Rocky Mountain Rider, and that inspired me.”

      Leon is working with three Montana-based non-profit cancer organizations and promises that 100% of all money raised will go directly to them to support those needs. He has already raised about $13,000 in previous fund-raisers for the cause.

      Leon, his two horses, and his mother — driving a support truck and trailer, left Beach, North Dakota on May 17, his aunt’s birthday, and plan to arrive back in Arlee on July 4, the day she died. Leon ’s horses are two half siblings that his father gave him when he was 13. The horses have held up well except for a couple of saddle sores caused by Leon riding his grandfather’s short-backed saddle. A few days of riding bareback for fewer miles and a newer, longer saddle with more padding have helped that problem.
