Salmon Select Horse Sale

We are in receipt of the report from the Wild Bunch in Salmon, Idaho . Their 39th Annual Salmon Select Horse Sale was held April 16, 2011, at the local fairgrounds.

The high-selling horse was Just Say Nic, a 1998 AQHA chestnut stallion sired by Reminic and out of a Colonel Freckles daughter. The versatile, competitive and cowy horse had earned over 100 AQHA points and was consigned by Julie Boer of Rigby , ID. He sold to Tom Yerden, Dan Meyers and Shelly Overracker of Carmen , ID , for $14,500.

High-selling horse Just Say Nic, a 1998 AQHA chestnut stallion, sold for $14,500.

The second high-selling horse was Lil Ruf Can Skate, a 2005 AQHA black gelding consigned by Terry Erickson of Rigby , ID. Sired by NRHA million dollar sire, Lil Ruf Peppy by Peppy San Badger, and out of a Smart Chic Olena daughter, this gelding excelled in reining, arena roping and ranch work. He was the winner of the Salmon Horse Sale ’s Ranch Horse competition. He was purchased by Greg Hull of Twin Falls , ID , for $10,000.

Another sale highlight was Smokey, a 1997 grade quarter horse gelding consigned by Bob Robinson of Hagerman , ID. This gentle gelding was an excellent heading & heeling horse, and sold for $5,500.

The average on 97 geldings was $2,552; the average on 30 mares was $1,556; and the overall average on 128 head was $2,412.

The top volume buyer by number of horses was Steve Bauchman of Challis, ID who purchased six head, and received the J. Wayne McArthur Award hat from Roy Jackson of Jaxonbilt Hat Co.

The top volume buyer by money spent was Kevin Buttons of Monarch Limited of Dillon , MT , who purchased four head for $8,800. They received the Fred H. Snook, Sr. Memorial Buckle sponsored by the Salmon Chamber of Commerce.

Salmon Select Mule Sale

The 12th Annual Salmon Select Mule Sale was held Friday night, April 15, 2011, at the local fairgrounds and featured 53 quality mules. Mule buyers hailed from ID, MT, WA, AK, WY, UT, OR, CA, TX and MN.

The high-selling mule was Rosalie, a 2006, 14.3-hand, gray molly mule consigned by Enos Borntrager of Seymore , Iowa . The gentle mule had a good handle and had been used for hunting in the Black Hills . She sold to Keith McCoy of Corning , CA , for $9,000.

The second high-selling mule was Bernard, a 2006, 15-hand, bay john mule consigned by Lindy Currie and Larry Gaustad of Belgrade , MT. This sweet and friendly mule had a good back and withers, and had been ridden and packed in the mountains. He sold to Gary Farmer of Brownfield , TX , for $5,600.

The third high-selling mule was Doc, a 2006, 15-hand, bay john mule, and another consignment by Enos Borntrager. This people-friendly mule had been ridden a lot of miles in the mountains. He sold to Dan McLaughlin of Valleyford , WA for $4,500.

Jeff and Christina Tift of Powell , WY , were honored as Mule Sale Consignors of the Year. Their consignment of seven mules sold for $21,600 to average $3,200 per head. Twenty-five sale mules competed in a Mule Trail Competition. The winner was Enos Borntrager’s high-selling mule.

The top five mules averaged $5,460 and the top ten mules averaged $4,560. The prices on mules were higher than the previous two years, with the average on 53 mules at $2,234. In 2010, 46 mules averaged $1,930, and in 2009, mules averaged $1,800.

Missoula Livestock’s Spring Catalog Horse Sale

The Missoula Livestock Exchange 8th Annual Spring Catalog Horse Sale was held May 14, 2011, at Missoula Livestock’s sale facility in Missoula , MT. Over 80 buyers signed up for bidding numbers.

The high-selling horse was Huslin Sunday Gold, a 2002 APHA bay tovero gelding sired by Hanks Sunday Man by Hobo Sunday Man and out of a Versary Bars grandaughter. Consigned by Kory Shriver of Redmond , OR , this stout, solid horse was good with kids, had been used extensively on ranches in eastern Oregon , and was wise to roping. He sold to Cody Campbell of Kalispell , MT , for $3,500.

The second high-selling horse was Caveman, a 1997 grade paint gelding consigned by Josh Carlbom of Augusta , MT. The stout gelding had been used extensively on the trail, both packing and riding, and would safely carry small children as well as big hunters. He sold to the Rocking J Ranch of Philipsburg, MT, for $2,800.

The third high-selling horse was Spud, a 2006 grade quarter horse red dun gelding consigned by Brandy Davis of Deer Lodge, MT. Spud had been used for trail riding, as well as on the ranch for chores such as calving, and pairing out and trailing cattle. He sold to the Rocking J Ranch of Philipsburg, MT, for $2,400.
