Defensive
Horse Safety
Stock safety awareness course. 8 hours, with hands-on time with stock.
Designed to meet the need for mandatory safety training for stock users that is
required in many Forest Service Regions. Anatomy, tack, and safety in working
with and hauling stock is stressed. May 30 & 31.
Basic
Horsemanship
Two-day Course. Basic riding instruction for new riders. Hands-on
bridling, saddling, mounting, dismounting, plus lots of riding. Safe handling
techniques are stressed at all times. Limited to 10 students. May 14-15.
Horse
Handling & Training Techniques
Three-day course. Experienced riders learn safe, correct procedures for
riding, training and handling saddle horses and mules, with an emphasis on
correcting bad habits and behavior. Bring your own horse, or one will be
provided. Limited to 10 students. May 16-18.
Ninemile
Packing Clinic
Five-day course. Learn how to pack mules and horses with Smoke Elser, Bob
Hoverson and Mark Pengelly. Learn about equine anatomy, saddles and tack,
packing the Decker saddle, feeding and care of stock, safe stock handling
techniques, and minimum impact camping and stock use. Includes an overnight pack
trip. Prerequisite for Advanced Packing course. May 21-25 and June 4-8.
Advanced
Packing
Six-day course. An enjoyable week of learning to safely pack, travel and
camp in the wilderness and backcountry with instructors Bob Hoverson and Mark
Pengelly, along with the FS Northern Region Pack Train. Learn trip planning and
preparation in bear country with stock, Leave No Trace camping with stock, and
work with a FS trail crew. Limited to 10 students. July 22-27.
Leave
No Trace Stock Master Educator
Five-day course. Teaches the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT) as it
applies to stock users and packers. Learn to teach hands-on methods of outdoor
ethics to diverse audiences. Graduates receive a “Master Educator”
certificate. Limited to 12 students. Dates are May 14-18 in
Montana
; and June 18-22 in the “front country” of the Great Smoky Mountains NP in
North Carolina
.
Other courses from the Ninemile Wildlands Training Center include Dutch
Oven Cooking; Back Country Survival; Practical Map, Compass and GPS; Crosscut
Saw Maintenance; and Historic Building Preservation Classes. New classes this
year are Basic Axemanship Skills and Bear Spray Training. A full slate of
Historic Building Restoration classes will also be held in 2012.
