Gordon Dale of
Yakima
,
Washington
, has been perfecting his Decker pack saddles for more than 25 years. His
reputation as a quality maker who knows what he is doing keeps a stack of back
orders from back country equestrians on his desk.
To satisfy nearly every packers needs, and
to offer a near-custom pack saddle, Dale makes eight different models of his
Decker. These come fully rigged, and include a heavy-duty half-breed. Many
models have a choice of single or double rigging; and stainless, chrome-plated,
brass or bronze hardware; and other special options.
Each pack saddle comes with a choice of three
steel arch types C, R, or S which are mounted on bars
which Dale hand-shapes from Ponderosa pine. His bars generally fit both horses
and mules of medium to ample build, weighing from about 850 to 1,400 pounds.
Standard, high-quality features on each Dale
Pack Decker pack saddle include Herman Oak harness leather, edged to give a
smooth, rounded finish; solid copper or solid brass rivets; ultra-smooth bottom
stitching on breechings, breast straps and spiders; rolled and contoured two-ply
breast straps that are sewn curved to prevent inside wrinkling; all straps are
either machine-edges or hand-edged for a smooth finish; and all top stitching is
in stitching grooves.
