February 2008 Issue
The sight of pine trees to shelter me from the hot sun, the sound
of the wind murmuring thru pine needles and the scent of pine resin
warming in the late spring sunshine. The sunshine warm on my back as I
ride my Arab/Quarter-Horse gelding along the high meadow trails. The
sound of creaking saddle leather and my Paint horse muttering his way
along. A hawk floating on the thermals, doing wingovers and dives. A
deer watching from the edge of a nearby stream and a fox pup peeking
around a tree for his first look at a horse and rider. A campfire
crackling in the fire pit and the scent of the evening meal cooking on
the camp stove. Stars sparkling in the sky, pine scent carried on the
breeze along with the reassuring sound of the lead mare’s bell as she
calmly grazes with her string of horses and mules.
I will always wish I could go back to those days, the best time
of my life. Unfortunately that can’t be, but I’m happy I have these
memories I can relive in my mind.
